The language of your body.
Understanding somatic healing, and why your body often knows what happened long before your mind can put it into words.
What somatic work is
Somatic work is a gentle, body-centered approach to healing that treats your mind and body as a unified system. Modern neuroscience shows that our nervous system receives, interprets, and stores sensory data from our environment through a “bottom-up” process called interoception. This means your body actually feels, braces against, and physically stores stressful sensations or emotional memories before your conscious brain even registers what is happening.
When we experience deep loss, trauma, or chronic stress, our survival brain triggers protective physical states, like fight, flight, or a heavy, frozen numbness. If these states aren’t processed, they become trapped in our muscles, posture, and tissues as chronic tension or nervous system dysregulation.
Somatic work helps you safely listen to your body’s hidden language. By utilizing gentle body awareness, mindful movement, and regulatory tracking, we can complete these stuck survival loops. This safely lowers stress hormones, releases stored emotional weight, and gently retrains your nervous system to return to a true state of internal warmth and safety, without requiring you to constantly relive or retell the painful story.
I have a beautiful “coping toolbox” of both practical and delicious self-care practices. It can be fun, relaxing, and empowering!
How it helps
Teaching your body it is safe right now
At its core, “somatic” means relating to the body. While traditional talk therapy focuses on the mind and processing thoughts, somatic work focuses on the felt sensations inside your body to help balance and heal your nervous system.
When you experience stress, overwhelm, or trauma, your brain triggers a physical survival response. Ideally, once the stressful event passes, your nervous system resets to a state of safety. However, chronic stress or unresolved trauma can cause the nervous system to get “stuck” in a state of high alert or shutdown.
Somatic work bridges the gap between mind and body. Instead of just talking about stress, you use physical tools, such as intentional breathing, gentle movement, tracking sensations, and targeted tapping, to send a direct message back to your brain: “We are safe right now.”
By communicating through the body, somatic work helps to:
- Release stored tension and physical constriction.
- Expand your window of tolerance so you can handle daily stressors without flipping into anxiety or shutdown.
- Rewire your automatic stress responses, allowing your nervous system to return to its natural, calm, and resilient baseline.
Essentially, somatic work teaches your body how to let go of the past so you can feel fully present, grounded, and safe in your skin today.
What does a “dysregulated” nervous system feel like?
For women navigating major life transitions, nervous system overload doesn’t always look like a panic attack. It often shows up as chronic physical and emotional exhaustion. You might feel like you are constantly running on adrenaline, experiencing “brain fog,” having trouble sleeping despite being exhausted, or feeling an underlying sense of dread or irritability.
Somatically, it can manifest as a tight chest, a knot in your stomach, or chronic muscle tension. If you feel like your body is permanently stuck in “fight, flight, or freeze” mode, your nervous system is simply asking for dedicated regulation and safety.
Do I have to talk about my trauma or loss to get results?
The beautiful answer is no. Our sessions look very different from traditional talk therapy. We can talk very little about the actual incident, loss, or trauma itself. You never have to force yourself to verbally re-live the painful details of your past to find relief today.
Your body already remembers exactly what happened, and it stores that stress, shock, and grief within your nervous system. Instead of focusing on the story, we focus entirely on the sensations, tension, and feelings that are actively stored in your body right now, and gently guide your nervous system out of survival mode.
Somatic tools for emotional exhaustion
Calming an overstimulated nervous system, reconnecting with your body’s wisdom.
Somatic work complements traditional talk therapy beautifully. While a licensed therapist helps you process your thoughts and understand the “why” behind your grief, my role is to add focus to your wellness journey and help your physical body integrate and release what talk therapy brings to light. Many clients find that pairing the two accelerates their healing.
